YKI's current expertise in the Cleantech area

Cleantech at YKI encompasses parts of the Technology focus areas; Formulation technology, Interfacial and Surface Modification Technologies and Nanotechnology and Structured Materials. Particular focus is on "green", "clean" and "healthy".
  •
SNAP - surfactants from natural products - a large and successful project that has led to significant new recent investment in YKI contract research
  • Green reformulations where environmentally safe materials have been incorporated into coatings etc
  • Clean label foods – several contracts
  • Self-cleaning surfaces – current project on developing self-cleaning cement technology
  • Self-cleaning technologies using friendly water-based ingredients has led to several patents by YKI workers together with member companies
  • Environmentally durable exterior coatings – current project for development of UV protective coats using nanotechnology
  • Energy storage materials – Project dealing with phase change materials for energy storage
  • Superlubrication – development of a fundamental new concept and examples of superlubricating surfaces – potentially deployable across multiple applications of the renewable energies and transport sectors
  • Water filtering/purification – numerous projects, recently demonstrated using magnetic nanotechnologies for waste removal from water
  • Cellulose and biopolymer materials and composites – numerous projects over decades, including current focus on barrier materials from renewable resources
  • Recycling - ink floatation, plastic floatation for recycling
  • Safer environment – developed new environmentally paper coating pigments; developed a wide range of cleavable surfactants technologies for more efficient and safer products where surfactants are otherwise released into the environment or are detrimental in use; actively consulted on surface chemical problems in nuclear waste storage
  • Current research on highly porous materials for use in Graetzel solar cells
  • Coating of solar cells and coatings of energy efficient houses
  • Joint work on anti-ice coatings of above-ground industrial heat-pumps
  • Biofuel formulation, which has led to patents and further development of jet biofuels
